How can mechanisms on satellites and other space equipment be kept moving reliably even after several years in a vacuum? Researchers from the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design at the BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) are seeking answers through their research in the field of space tribology.
Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication of mechanical components. While conventional lubricants are usually sufficient on Earth, conditions in space are entirely different. In a vacuum and under extreme temperatures, conventional lubricants lose their properties. This makes it necessary to develop and test specialised solutions capable of ensuring the long-term reliability of space mechanisms.
This is precisely the focus of a cutting-edge laboratory at BUT FME, featured in an episode of Kosmické Brno (Space Brno). The report introduces not only the research itself, but also highlights the importance of the FME researchers’ work for the development of the Czech space industry.
