Functional and Nanostructural Materials

The course Functional and Nanostructured Materials focuses on introducing several, often highly specific, applications of certain materials. This course is intended to introduce students to selected advanced applications of materials on various bases (metals, ceramics, composites, ...) or to provide them with some broader insight into some already known processes, procedures and applications.

Prerequisites
General overview about common engineering materials, basic knowledge in physics and chemistry, basic knowledge of composites and advanced materials.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The course credit requirements are to prepare a presentation about chosen topic related to one of topics discussed during lectures. Obtaining credit is mandatory for admission to the exam. Final exam is oral and consists of more comprehensive presentation and the examination part.

Aims
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the fact that often only a slight change in the production process or chemical composition of known material can lead to significantly different and very specific properties, or that known materials can have unexpected uses at first glance, if there is a sufficient level of understanding of the nature of the behavior of the given material.

Syllabus
Students will prepare presentation about topic of their choice or a scientific article related to one of the topics discussed. The goal is deeper understanding of the topic and possibly expand on it with further knowledge.
