Advanced Ceramics Technologies
FSI-9PKT Acad. year: 2026/2027 Both semester
The course covers the basics of advanced bulk polycrystalline ceramics technology. Emphasis is placed on the principles of the technologies and the resulting advantages and limitations of individual methods. The technological overview also includes modern methods such as additive manufacturing and CNC machining of ceramic semi-finished products.

Syllabus
1. Introduction to ceramics, definitions, properties, classification of ceramics, specification of advanced ceramics.
2. Ceramic powder characterization, powder packing, effects of powder characteristics on packing density, powder agglomeration.
3. Ceramic suspensions, colloidal treatment, spray drying, freeze granulation.
4. Forming methods – dry shaping, methods and principles.
5. Forming methods – wet shaping, methods and principles.
6. Forming methods – plastic shaping, methods and principles.
7. Free form fabrication, additive manufacturing, methods and principles.
8. Drying and binder removal.
9. Milling of ceramics, porous ceramics.
10. Sintering, mechanisms, effect of particle packing, pressure assisted sintering – methods and principles.
