Course detail

System Integration in Industrial Automation

FSI-VAU Acad. year: 2026/2027 Winter semester

The course focuses on practical procedures, methods, and tools used in the design, implementation, and commissioning of automation systems in industrial practice. Teaching is based on the Siemens ecosystem; therefore, control design, communication configuration, and the creation of HMI visualizations are carried out in TIA Portal. Students will become familiar with the complete process of developing an automation project: from initial customer requirements and the preparation of technical documentation, through PLC programming and HMI design, to the integration of peripheral devices and third-party products.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Prerequisites

Knowledge of automatic control, PLC programming, robotics, and automation components, including drives and machine vision, is assumed. All of this is expected at the level of previously completed university courses.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Knowledge and skills are verified by credit and examination. Credit requirements: elaboration of given tasks. Attendance at lectures is recommended, while attendance at practical sessions is mandatory. Practical sessions that a student is unable to attend in the regular term can be made up during a substitute term. The exam is in the form of a test and covers all the material taught in the course.

Language of instruction

Czech

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the procedures and tools for designing, programming, and integrating industrial automation systems in the Siemens TIA Portal environment, including the design and implementation of HMI. Students will learn to design the communication structure of a system, connect individual devices, and integrate third-party products into control systems. Upon completing the course, they will be able to design, configure, and commission automation projects and appropriately incorporate them into industrial processes.
