Original abstract
This paper describes fabrication of ferritic oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels by mechanical alloying preparation route. The conventional ODS steel of chemical composition 17Cr-1Mo-Y2O3 and low-activation ODS steel of chemical composition 14Cr-2W-Y2O3 were prepared. The 17Cr-1Mo-Y2O3 ODS steel was prepared using commercially available powder steel AISI 434LHC by adding 0.25 wt.% of metallic yttrium. The 14Cr-2W-Y2O3 ODS steel was made from atomic clean powders. Composite powders were alloyed using high-energy planetary ball mill under air and argon atmosphere. During mechanical alloying of composite powders in the air atmosphere cracking of powder particles predominated over alloying and very fine composite powder was prepared. After 12 hours chemically homogenous composite powders were obtained having uniform distribution of particles sizes. Longer mechanical alloying of composite powders led to distinctive plastic deformation which induced development of finer ferritic grain structure of compacted ODS steel.
