Original abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine droplet motion with respect to the mechanism of the liquid breakup for four twin-fluid atomizers. A high-speed camera was used to evaluate the primary breakup. Time-dependent data of droplets in the spray were acquired by means of a phase-Doppler analyser (PDA). It is shown that there are demonstrable differences in droplet dynamics amongst all the atomizers. Moreover, the influence of the primary breakup on the dynamics of the spray is discussed in terms of the velocity fluctuations and the turbulence intensity. A correlation of the axial and radial velocity shows unexpected behaviour that was attributed to the mechanism of liquid breakup. Presented results also point to the interaction of the large droplets with the air.
