Original abstract

Additions of some solutes or impurities to a host metal can change substantially its properties, e.g. yield stress, plasticity, toughness and cohesion. Some elements such as phosphorus, antimony and tin, are mainly responsible for embrittlement of grain boundaries in bcc iron. In this work, fracture behaviour of binary Fe–Sb and Fe–Sn polycrystalline alloys is studied both experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that brittle intergranular fracture prevails there.
