Original abstract
The effect of surface texturing within thin EHD contacts has been studied by thin film colorimetric interferometry. The behavior of micro-dimples has been observed for conditions when the disc is moving faster than the micro-textured ball. The presence of deep micro-dimples within lubricated contact was found to result in film thickness reduction downstream that can lead to lubrication film breakdown. Conversely, as the depth of micro-dimples is reduced beneficial effect of micro-dimples on film thickness formation has been observed. Obtained results suggest that surface texturing using appropriate micro-dimples could help to increase lubrication films capabilities even within non-conformal contacts.
