Original abstract
This study addresses the urgent issue of urban air pollution, focusing on road dust as a significant source of non-exhaust particulate matter. Measurements were conducted during the summer at a busy intersection in Brno, Czech Republic, where concentrations of particulate matter (PM), gaseous pollutants, meteorological parameters, and traffic intensity were monitored. Data collected using a specialized monitoring vehicle and traffic analysis software revealed a clear bimodal daily pattern of pollution corresponding to morning and evening traffic peaks. A strong correlation between NOₓ and PM concentrations confirmed the dominant influence of traffic emissions during the summer period, with minimal impact from residential heating. While NOₓ levels decreased on weekends, PM concentrations remained stable, likely due to recreational activities in a nearby park. The results also showed a shift of rush-hour peaks to later evening hours compared to winter patterns. The study highlights the significant role of traffic-related road dust in urban air quality and emphasizes the importance of considering seasonal and traffic dynamics in air pollution management.
