Original abstract

This paper investigates the effect of controlled pre-stress applied during the filament winding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) retaining sleeves, intended for high-speed permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) rotors. Using pre-preg unidirectional carbon fibers, a set of test specimens was fabricated under varying tension loads to simulate realistic rotor conditions. Tensile tests, supported by digital image correlation (DIC), were performed to evaluate strain distribution and mechanical integrity. The results demonstrate a clear correlation between the applied pre-stress and enhanced strength, stiffness, and homogeneity of the CFRP structure. The findings contribute to better material utilization and rotor durability in demanding application, while mitigating the risk of critical failure scenarios during rotor operation.
