Motivaci studentů při řešení semestrálních prací je možné zvýšit atraktivitou a reálností analyzovaného problému. Náš článek přináší ukázku semestrální práce studentů Matematického inženýrství, kteří zpracovávali data pořízená při Noci vědců na Ústavu matematiky Fakulty strojního inženýrství Vysokého učení technického v Brně. Díky této společenské události mohli studenti ověřovat hypotézu, že poměr mezi výškou postavy a vzdáleností pupku od země odpovídá zlatému řezu. Jednotlivé kroky semestrální práce zahrnovaly mimo jiné ověření hypotézy dvourozměrného normálního rozdělení vektoru obou vzdáleností, ověřování shodnosti korelací měřených výšek pro děti a dospělé, stejně jako neparametrické testy shody rozdělení poměrů pro děti a dospělé. Zajímavým aspektem pro studenty byla rovněž analýza podílu dvou závislých normálně rozdělených veličin, která se v běžné výuce často neprobírá. Tato zkušenost nám potvrdila, že zapojení reálných a originálních dat do výuky může výrazně posílit zájem studentů o statistickou analýzu a rozvoj jejich kritického myšlení.

Student motivation when working on semester projects can be enhanced by increasing the attractiveness and real-world relevance of the analyzed problem. Our article presents an example of a semester project carried out by students of Mathematical Engineering, based on data collected during the Night of Scientists at the Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology. Thanks to this public event, students had the opportunity to test the hypothesis that the ratio between a person's height and the distance from the navel to the ground corresponds to the golden ratio. The steps of the semester project included, among others, testing the hypothesis of a bivariate normal distribution of the two measured distances, testing the equality of correlations between measured heights for children and adults, as well as applying nonparametric tests of equality of the distributions of the ratios for both groups. An additional point of interest for students was the analysis of the ratio of two dependent normally distributed variables, a topic that is not commonly covered in standard coursework.
