Original abstract
The resistance of coated structures to fatigue failure of substrate is investigated. In order to quantify the influence of elastic mismatch of coating and substrate on the fatigue threshold applied stress, a simplified approach based on calculations of crack mouth opening displacement CMOD has been suggested. It is concluded that the resistance of the substrate to fatigue damage significantly decreases for cases of hard coatings on a stiffer substrate. Traditional approaches may have underestimated the effect and estimations of the residual fatigue life of coated structures neglecting this fact could lead to non-conservative values and thus cause unexpected failures.
