Original abstract

Thermal treatment of sludge represents a renewable energy source, which is presently widely investigated. However, thermal utilization of sludge requires some pre-treatment. The sludge has to be preheated and de-watered before combustion. The preheating has a significant effect on flocculation and consequently de-watering efficiency. In this work, we used a helical heat exchanger for the sludge preheating. Process water was used as the hot stream. Correlations necessary for design calculation of the helical heat exchanger were adopted from literature, in spite of some slight differences in the heat exchanger geometry. In order to validate and tune the design correlations, CFD simulations of the heat exchanger have been performed. Commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for all computations.
