Original abstract
Test specimens of AlSi9Cu3 alloy cast in sand and metalic moulds were used to assess the extent of porosity in dependence on the gas content in the melt and on the solidification rate. On the basis of the dendrite arm spacing (DAS) the size of primary phases was evaluated and the mechanical properties of test pieces were measured. It has been proved that higher solidification rates contributes to greatly reduced porosity, smaller size of individual gas pores, finer structure, and higher strength and ductility of the alloy. The shape of pores is influenced by gas content significantly.
