Original abstract

Damage of multi-layer commercial plastic pipes with dimensional integrated protective surfaces was investigated. Fracture toughness was chosen as a parameter relevant to evaluation of the resistance of pipe material to slow crack growth. A special type of a C-shaped non-homogeneous fracture mechanics specimen machined directly from the pipe was suggested, numerically analyzed and tested. To describe the influence of the interface between different material layers of the C-shaped specimen on crack behavior, a modification of standard crack fracture mechanics was used. Transferability of the fracture mechanics parameters obtained from a small laboratory C-type specimen to pipe systems was discussed using a constraint-based two-parameter fracture mechanics approach.
