Original abstract

The paper describes the drilling and milling of fibre reinforced plastics from the point of view of tool life and cutting forces. Cutting force components (drilling: Fx – in axial direction, Mt – torque; milling: Fz – in direction of cutting speed) an a special PC-software and statistical assessment are used for evaluation of the drilling force components with respect to an influence of cutting conditions, tool material (high speed steels, sintered carbides), tool geometry, tool wear and orientation of the fibres. Multiple regression analysis is used to determine the complex relationships between cutting torque and forces versus the drill geometry, drill diameter and feed per revolution. Tool life versus cutting speed dependences for high speed steel cutters are evaluated for milling of glass fibre reinforced plastic.
