Original abstract
Due to its excellent technological as well as mechanical properties, nodular cast iron is very often ranked among so called hi-tech or advanced material. The details made of it have many substantial advantages comparing with the details made of cast steels or weldments. An overwiew of these advantages together with the description of production, chemical composition and several types of heat treatment are given in the paper. Static and above all fatigue properties of nodular cast iron are presented with close relation to its microstructure. In the high-cycle range the influence of various factors on fatigue behaviour is discused, e.g. loading mode, size effect, notch effect, ath the asymetry of loading cycle. Also basic knowledge dealing with low-cycle range are mentioned. Both static and fatigue properties of nodular cast iron are compared with the same properties of unalloyed wrought steels. The comparison is based on many experimental results obtained from own test as well as from published measurements whose references are added in large scale.
