Original abstract

The time and cost pressures placed on the modern product engineering and development market demand rapid analysis, advanced development capabilities and high levels of precision. Where mechanical items were traditionally verified through empirical testing, tools such as FEA, MBS, EHD or CFD are commonly used today. This paper deals with a valvetrain vibration modeling in multi-body system employing flexible bodies of main components. Camshaft fatigue analyses are also discussed. Interactions between the engine block and the camshaft are solved via a hydrodynamic bearing model including journal tiltings. A cranktrain has a great influence on camshaft vibrations and together with a gear timing mechanism model it is included into a valvetrain computational model. All simulation and measurement strategies are presented on a diesel four-cylinder in-line engine.
