Original abstract

Recent advances in understanding the processes of casting metals into green sand moulds have shown that the occurrence of reoxidation plays a key role in the control of the quality of castings. The reoxidation gives rise to solid, liquid and gaseous products that may further react with the metal and the foundry mould, causing various surface and internal defects in the casting. The resultant occurrence of casting defects is affected by the content of deoxidation elements in the metal and by the process of deoxidation reactions in the mould during and after metal pouring. The present work deals with changes in oxygen activity in metal poured into sand moulds.
