Original abstract

Measurements of residual stresses within hard surface layers are usually performed using X-ray, magnetic or mechanical methods. The X-ray diffraction strain measurement has limitations as the usual bulk and complexity of the equipment which can preclude field application. A rather simple applicability of magnetic methods is severely counterbalanced by complicated assessments of stress gradients throughout the layer and their restriction to ferromagnetic materials. Classical mechanical methods as Hole-Drilling or Layer-Removal are based on cumbersome destructive procedures and difficult measurements of the related displacements.
