Original abstract

Emission decrease requirements (mainly of CO2) together with fuel savings force the development of modern combustion engines. The decrease of mechanical losses caused by friction losses is therefore a crucial requirement on the modern engine design. The paper presents computational and experimental methods which enable to determine portions of friction losses of different engine parts. In the case of the experimental approach, a special equipment is developed. This equipment enables to find friction losses for a whole engine speed range. The paper covers the experimental equipment development, the experiment realisation and the friction loss evaluation. The computational approach is also mentioned. The computational and experimental methods are presented on a SI engine.
