This study investigates how oxidation affects RCF cracks in rail materials. Cracks were formed using a twin-disc machine under different conditions and then subjected to controlled oxidation in a heated chamber. OM/SEM observation revealed the progressive growth of an oxide layer and its penetration deep into the crack network. While oxidation may initially promote crac opening through volume expansion, it also fills the insides of the cracks, suppressing any fluid-driven propagation. Furthermore, cracks are gradually consumed by a growing oxide layer and are eventually removed under loading due to the lstrength of the layer.
