This study investigates the performance and efficiency of solid stick Top-of-Rail (TOR) friction modifiers, addressing concerns over their high consumption rates and the generation of airborne particles. By utilizing laboratory tribometers, the researchers explored how application force and duration influence frictional behavior and material transfer, areas that remain less understood compared to liquid alternatives. The findings indicate that while application parameters do affect performance, they do not result in dangerously low friction levels; furthermore, implementing a variable-force application method may optimize effectiveness. Ultimately, the study concludes that product transfer to the rail is inherently limited and emphasizes the need for further investigation into the impact of temperature on these mechanisms.
