The university-specific certification system which reflects necessity of professionally-orintated language competences and which is applicable to different languages is deeply felt. At present, there is the UNIcert system of foreign language training nad certification developed by German universities and based on a Common European Framework of Reference which is both specific (academic staff and university students are a target group) and comprehensive (all languages, not only English, at all levels). As it is the only basis for the mutual recognition of university language qualifications, its adoption would promote the international harmonization of language tuition.
