As a result of the Bologna Process and Lisbon Strategy, it is of primary importance for future graduates to possess high levels of communicative competence in foreign languages, intercultural competence as well as an ability to learn languages in an autonomous way. All these are regarded as essential from the point of view of the employability of graduates and personal development. All higher education institutions have to provide students, regardless of their field of specialisation, with opportunities for improving their knowledge of languages, for learning new languages, and for becoming more independent in their language learning. That is why the organizers joined to search for the common solutions applicable in higher education. The conference "Languages for Specific Purposes in Higher Education – Searching for Common Solutions" therefore focused on the importance, possible role, form and future of foreign language learning and teaching. It addressed the issues such as ESP, language testing, content language integrated learning, ICT in language learning, European Language Portfolio, i.e. the areas that are closely connected with the language learning in higher education. The intention of the organizers was to create a forum for sharing experience, looking for fresh ideas and making contacts.
