Loaded materials can fail by rapid fracture at stresses much below their strength level as determined in tests on carefully prepated specimens. To ensure fracture-safe design in the materials , the transition-temperature approach is often used. One of the experimental possibilities determining transition temperature isn the Charpy impact test, when a notched-bar speciamen is loaded in bending by a swinging pendulum and the energy absorbed in the fracturing specimen is measured. Impact energy vs. temperature curve called transitioncurve is divided into three regions : the region of lower temperatures with brittle fracture and low values of absorbed energy (lower shelf), the transition region, and the region of higher temperatures with ductile fracture and high values of absorbed energy (higher shelf). Often also the lateral expansion of broken bars and percentage of brittle (or ductile) fracture surface is measured.
