Laser ablation (LA) sampling with inductively coupled plasma and optical emission or mass detection was used for analysis of layers with intermetallic Zn-Fe phases on steel substrate instead of routinely used techniques as electron microprobe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA) or Moessbauer spectroscopy. These methods are time-consuming and more expensive than LA. Thus, LA potential to replace them was tested here. Average ablation rate in the phases, tailing effects and signal stoichiometry were investigated. Found non-stoichiometric levels of Fe signals are subjected to further research of fractionation phenomena at LA of these materials.
