It is often useful to demonstrate the behaviour of physical systems by means of mathematical models. Famulus, MathCad or some electronical spreadsheet programs provide a suitable environment for this activity. The computational and graphics capabilities of these pieces of software provide invaluable learning aids for students. Using them effectively will allow a simultaneous complementary approach to the traditional analytical methods of treating many physics and engineering problems. This paper describes some features of these programs and how they can be applied to explore mathematical models of physical systems.
