Implant loosening and infection surrounding K wires and screws are major complications of external fixation. Clinical experience and bimechanical tests have shown that the diaphyseal bone is well suited to external fixation with screws whilst wire fixation performs better than screws in the metaphysis. A new external fixator has been developed to take advantage of this fact and good clinical results have been achieved in our Unit. The main task in the study was a simulation of the dynamic process of wire loosening in the lab to quantify the mechanical factors affecting this process.
