A poro-sity with pore size on the order of milimeters is typical for this material. The paper deals with problems of evaluating elastic constants at this type of material – namely elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The experiments showed that evaluating the elasticity modulus from strains measured by electric resistance strain gauges is not credible because the measured strain values are influenced by strain concentrations in the pore vicinity. The elasticity modulus was evaluated from the deflection of a sample loaded by four-point-flexion. The strain concentration in the pore vicinity was modelled by computational modelling and the influence of porosity value on its global elasticity modulus was simulated. Ceramics was treated as a particle composite with particles having zero elasticity modulus.

[popis] => The paper contains the results of the stress and reliability analyses of the ceramic head of the total hip joint endoprosthesis under testing conditions in accordance with the norm ISO 7206-5. The axisymmetric production inaccuracies of the contact taper of the head and the stem are considered. The head stresses are obtained from the computational methods (finite elements) and the head reliability is based on the Weibull weakest link theory. The effects of the production inaccuracies on the head’s hoop stress and the head’s contact pressure along the contact taper are analyzed in detail, because the maximum tensile stress is located in this region. [popis_en] => The model of reinforcing mechanism which improves the fracture toughness of brittle matrix composites reinforced by ductile particles is analyzed. The particles form a bridging zone and, thus, constrain the crack opening. The stress-crack opening displacement relationship relies upon the constant volume plastic flow of the particles. This model incorporates in a certain way also the particle/matrix interface properties. The particles are allowed to deform using several different patterns which correspond to the particular strength of the particle/matrix interface. The triaxiality of the stress state within particles is considered and its impact on the critical crack opening displacement is indluded. The fracture criteria are analyzed for several combinations of micromechanical parameters of composite system and the resistance curves are presented.

The J2 flow theory is considered as the relevant physical law of plastic flow in inclusions. A strong constraint exerted by matrix on inclusions causes that even the evanescent kinematical hardening rule does not predict any ratchetting of a composite. It is shown that the weakening constraint of the matrix caused by microfracture damage around inclusions is closely coupled with the plasticity of inclusion and leads to ratchetting even when the plastic deformation of inclusions is described by an isotropic hardening rule. A detailed parametric study has revealed that ratchetting is followed by either plastic or elastic shakedown, depending on the load amplitude, composite parameters and the mean microcracks length.

[popis_en] => Mori-Tanaka approach is used to modelling metal particulate-reinforced brittle matrix composites under cyclic compressive loading. The J2 flow theory is considered as the relevant physical law of plastic flow in inclusions. A strong constraint exerted by matrix on inclusions causes that even the evanescent kinematical hardening rule does not predict any ratchetting of a composite. It is shown that the weakening constraint of the matrix caused by microfracture damage around inclusions is closely coupled with the plasticity of inclusion and leads to ratchetting even when the plastic deformation of inclusions is described by an isotropic hardening rule. A detailed parametric study has revealed that ratchetting is followed by either plastic or elastic shakedown, depending on the load amplitude, composite parameters and the mean microcracks length.

[popis_en] => The model of reinforcing mechanism which improves the fracture toughness of brittle matrix composites reinforced by ductile particles is analyzed. The particles form a bridging zone and, thus, constrain the crack opening. The stress-crack opening displacement relationship relies upon the constant volume plastic flow of the particles. This model incorporates in a certain way also the particle/matrix interface properties. The particles are allowed to deform using several different patterns which correspond to the particular strength of the particle/matrix interface. The deformation patterns are simplified versions of those obtained using finite element computations. An additional critical crack opening displacement condition behind the crack tip is imposed. The action of the system of discretely distributed particles is replaced by the action of smeared forces. The resulting boundary-value problem is reduced to the strongly singular integral equation for the crack opening displacement.
