It causes abnormal blood flow, endothelial dysfunction, higher pulse wave velocity, and consequently elevated pressure wave amplitude. Methods: This paper presents the influence of these changes via multiscale 3D-0D transient computational fluid dynamics simulations of blood flow in five patient-specific geometries of human carotid bifurcation using archetypal flow waveforms for young and old subjects. Results: The proposed model shows a significant decrease in the time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) for the old archetypal flow waveform. This is in good agreement with clinical data on a straight segment of common carotid arteries available for young and old subjects. Moreover, our study showed that the decrease of areaaveraged TAWSS related to the old flow waveform is much more pronounced (2.5 divided by 4.5 times higher) at risk areas (areas showing TAWSS below its threshold value of 0.48 Pa) than in straight segments commonly considered in clinical studies. Conclusions: Since arterial stiffness can be lowered through long-term usage of any of the five basic groups of antihypertensives, possible benefits of such medical therapy could be not only lowering blood pressure and peripheral resistance but also in increasing the TAWSS and thus attenuating an important mechanism of the atherosclerotic process.

The predicted minimal spacing between cracks, critical time for crack initiation, and initial depth of the induced cracks are compared and discussed for different designs. An increase of up to ∼40 % in ΔTc is predicted for multi-material ceramics with a thin alumina surface layer with compressive stresses, compared to bulk reference alumina.

[popis] => Collagen fiber arrangement is decisive for constitutive description of anisotropic mechanical response of arterial wall. In this study, their orientation in human common carotid artery was investigated using polarized light microscopy and an automated algorithm giving more than 4 sdot; 10 6 fiber angles per slice. In total 113 slices acquired from 18 arteries taken from 14 cadavers were used for fiber orientation in the circumferential-axial plane. All histograms were approximated with unimodal von Mises distribution to evaluate dominant direction of fibers and their concentration parameter. 10 specimens were analyzed also in circumferential-radial and axial -radial planes (2-4 slices per specimen in each plane); the portion of radially oriented fibers was found insignificant. In the circumferential-axial plane, most specimens showed a pronounced unimodal distribution with angle to circumferential direction mu = 0.7 degrees +/- 9.4 degrees and concentration parameter b = 3.4 +/- 1.9. Suitability of the unimodal fit was confirmed by high values of coefficient of determination (mean R 2 = 0.97, median R 2 = 0.99). Differences between media and adventitia layers were not found statistically significant. The results are directly applicable as structural parameters in the GOH constitutive model of arterial wall if the postulated two fiber families are unified into one with circumferential orientation.

[popis_en] => Collagen fiber arrangement is decisive for constitutive description of anisotropic mechanical response of arterial wall. In this study, their orientation in human common carotid artery was investigated using polarized light microscopy and an automated algorithm giving more than 4 sdot; 10 6 fiber angles per slice. In total 113 slices acquired from 18 arteries taken from 14 cadavers were used for fiber orientation in the circumferential-axial plane. All histograms were approximated with unimodal von Mises distribution to evaluate dominant direction of fibers and their concentration parameter. 10 specimens were analyzed also in circumferential-radial and axial -radial planes (2-4 slices per specimen in each plane); the portion of radially oriented fibers was found insignificant. In the circumferential-axial plane, most specimens showed a pronounced unimodal distribution with angle to circumferential direction mu = 0.7 degrees +/- 9.4 degrees and concentration parameter b = 3.4 +/- 1.9. Suitability of the unimodal fit was confirmed by high values of coefficient of determination (mean R 2 = 0.97, median R 2 = 0.99). Differences between media and adventitia layers were not found statistically significant. The results are directly applicable as structural parameters in the GOH constitutive model of arterial wall if the postulated two fiber families are unified into one with circumferential orientation.

[popis] => Nonlinear kinetic energy harvesters are becoming more and more popular as well as advanced and efficient. This paper presents the study of the dynamics of such a system in a wide range of excitation parameters, assuming at the same time the possibility of a cyclical and smooth change of the potential function. We have designed a system that allows to obtain a wide spectrum of potential characteristics, from a single well to a three -well system, and we have analyzed its effectiveness. Next, we checked the influence of parameters characterizing the change of potential using bifurcation diagrams and their comparison with the effective voltage values. We also analyzed the behavior of the system in chaotic and periodic motion zones and presented selected sections of Poincare and Fourier amplitude -frequency spectra of chaotic solutions. The last element of the analysis was the impact of cyclic potential change on coexisting solutions. We have shown that the best effectiveness is achieved when the frequency of the external load is equal to the resonant frequency of the flexible cantilever beam and the change of potential is limited to extreme positions.

[popis] => The paper presents an efficient methodology for computation of the evolution of the fatigue crack retardation and acceleration effects due to crack closure during variable amplitude loading. The presented approach can lead to a very effective tool for estimation of residual fatigue life of engineering structures. Conventionally, consideration of variable-amplitude loading is either computationally too demanding, such as in finite element modelling, or challenging to unify the strip-yield model with another computational code. The simple analytical formulae available in literature are based on residual stress, which does not describe correctly the delayed retardation effect and in some cases it can be non-conservative. This work presents simple analytical equations describing the development of the crack closure based on the results of the strip-yield model for amplitude changes at the load ratio R = 0.1. The parabolic function enables simple computation of the maximum crack closure occurring after an overload without running any simulation. The equations also enable computation of crack closure behaviour following amplitude changes with the consideration of various cyclic material properties reflected in the tuneable ratio between the monotonic and cyclic plastic zone sizes.

[popis_en] => The paper presents an efficient methodology for computation of the evolution of the fatigue crack retardation and acceleration effects due to crack closure during variable amplitude loading. The presented approach can lead to a very effective tool for estimation of residual fatigue life of engineering structures. Conventionally, consideration of variable-amplitude loading is either computationally too demanding, such as in finite element modelling, or challenging to unify the strip-yield model with another computational code. The simple analytical formulae available in literature are based on residual stress, which does not describe correctly the delayed retardation effect and in some cases it can be non-conservative. This work presents simple analytical equations describing the development of the crack closure based on the results of the strip-yield model for amplitude changes at the load ratio R = 0.1. The parabolic function enables simple computation of the maximum crack closure occurring after an overload without running any simulation. The equations also enable computation of crack closure behaviour following amplitude changes with the consideration of various cyclic material properties reflected in the tuneable ratio between the monotonic and cyclic plastic zone sizes.

Therefore, miniature testing provides an alternative that is researched together with the following calibration of the ductile fracture criteria and investigating the size effect.

The aim is to design miniature testing equipment and specimens for tensile testing, which covers various stress states. This is supplemented by the small punch test, which has the same specimen thickness, taken from the literature to broaden the portfolio for calibration. The second part deals with conducting the finite element analysis, which provided a basis for the calibration of the phenomenological ductile fracture criterion applicable to crack-free bodies to indicate the crack initiation.
Methods
The steel frame to test thin specimens is designed with optical measurement of deformations. The finite element method is used, within Abaqus and user subroutines, to simulate the tests to obtain the variables needed for the calibration. In addition, the calibration of the criterion using machine learning is explored.
Results
The feasibility of the proposed experimental program is tested on the aluminium alloy 2024-T351. Moreover, the numerical simulations, which showed a good match with experiments in terms of force responses, adds to the knowledge of modelling in the scope of continuum damage mechanics.
Conclusions
The presented results provide a material basis for the aluminium alloy studied on a lower scale, while they broaden the testing possibilities and analyses the calibration strategies for the best failure predictability possible.

[popis] => Hardwood has become widespread in European forests. The strongest factor is climate change and damage to conifers by the bark beetle. The effort to study hardwoods grows with increasing volume of applications. Therefore, European beech wood was investigated under two impact loads in two material directions, resulting in four unique combinations supplemented by the measurement of the friction coefficient. Then, it was computationally simulated to reproduce the cracking, while the material model reflected the orthotropic behaviour in elasticity, plasticity and failure. The model was coded using the user subroutine in Abaqus to initiate and propagate the crack using the element deletion. The resulting reaction forces were in good agreement with those from the experiments. Cracking was numerically simulated in three of four cases as experimentally observed, however, upon larger deflections. Therefore, the model is applicable for further investigations.

The effort to study hardwoods grows with increasing volume of applications. Results Patients in the intervention group had significantly shorter mean intercanine distance and arch length than control patients at both 5 and 10 years of age (p<.001 for all). There were no significant differences in intermolar distance at both 5 (p = .945) and 10 years (p = .105) of patients' age. The average 5YO index increased from 2.46 to an average GOSLON 10-year score of 2.89 in intervention group. Conclusion Intercanine distance and dental arch length of patients with UCLP are significantly reduced at 5 and 10 years after early cleft lip and palate surgeries compared to the healthy population. Dental arch relationships at 5 and 10 years of patients with UCLP show comparable outcomes to those reported by other cleft centers.
